Where it fits
DROPS Nepal is a medium-weight yarn (CYC 4). Its standard put-up gives 150 metres per 100 g, which is the figure to use when comparing it with another yarn. The recommended needle is 5 mm. The manufacturer's gauge is 17 sts / 10 cm.
Alpaca is warm, soft and prone to growing under its own weight. Block gently, dry flat, and swatch a hanging swatch if the finished length matters.
Substitution notes
Match by length and gauge band before anything else. A replacement within roughly 10% of 150 m per 100 g will usually land in the same fabric territory; a larger gap means you should recalculate the project quantity and swatch again. Fibre composition matters too: alpaca adds drape and warmth but little elasticity, so a wool replacement will hold its shape more firmly.
